Pong Tutorials
Learn paddle control, ball angle mechanics, and the level progression to beat your high score.
What is Pong?
A single-player vertical breakout variant. The paddle is at the bottom; the ball bounces off the three walls. There are no bricks — the challenge is maintaining the rally as the ball speeds up with each level.
Step-by-step: Starting a game
- Press Space or tap to launch the ball from the center
- Move the paddle left or right to intercept the ball
- The ball rebounds off the top, left, and right walls
- Hit the ball back with the paddle to continue the rally
- Keep the rally alive — every 10 successful hits advances a level and speeds the ball up
Understanding ball bounce angles
| Paddle sector hit | Ball direction |
|---|---|
| Left third | Ball bends left |
| Center third | Ball preserves current direction |
| Right third | Ball bends right |
| Wall (any) | Simple reflection |
How the ball speeds up
Every 10 successful paddle hits advances one level. Ball speed multiplies by 1.12 at each level. At Level 3 the ball is about 40% faster than it started; at Level 8 it is more than double the starting speed. Anticipate — do not react.
Leveling and scoring formula
| Level | Hits needed | Speed multiplier | Points per hit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0 | 1.00× | 10 |
| 2 | 10 | 1.12× | 20 |
| 3 | 20 | 1.25× | 30 |
| 5 | 40 | 1.57× | 50 |
| 8 | 70 | 2.21× | 80 |

Advanced: Using sector control
Intentionally hitting the left or right third of the paddle lets you steer the ball away from corners. When the ball is heading toward the right wall, intercept with the left third to redirect it back to center. This gives you easier returns and avoids the narrow angles that form at corners.
Top 5 tips to beat your high score
- Stay in the center of the paddle range rather than chasing the ball to the edges — it gives you the largest coverage window.
- Use sector control consciously: redirect the ball toward the center to avoid wall corners.
- Do not chase the ball into corners; let it come back naturally via wall reflection rather than over-correcting.
- Stay calm as speed increases — small, controlled movements beat large frantic ones.
- Plan your return before the ball reaches you, not when it arrives.
