Strategy guides and tips to help you reach the 2048 tile and beyond.

How does 2048 work?

A 4×4 grid starts with two tiles. Every arrow key press slides all tiles in that direction. When two tiles of the same number collide, they merge into one tile worth their sum. The goal is to create a tile with the value 2048.

Step-by-step: Your first game

  1. Start the game — two tiles appear on the 4×4 grid
  2. Press an arrow key to slide all tiles in that direction
  3. Identical tiles that collide merge into one tile with their combined value
  4. A new tile (2 or 4) spawns in a random empty cell after every move
  5. Repeat, keeping your highest tile in a corner, until you reach 2048

The corner strategy

The most reliable strategy is to lock your highest tile in one corner and never move it. Build a descending chain leading away from that corner. Example layout (top-left corner):

2048 | 1024 | 512 | 256
 128 | 64 | 32 | 16
   8 | 4 | 2 | .
   . | . | . | .

Only slide left and up. Avoid pressing right or down unless absolutely necessary.

How to build a merge chain

Arrange tiles in descending order so that when you slide, lower tiles feed into higher tiles. If your sequence is 64 → 32 → 16 → 8, a single direction slide can resolve several merges at once, freeing up space on the board.

What to do when the board gets crowded

When the board fills up, resist random moves. Use Undo (Z) to revert a bad move. Scan for any adjacent pairs and plan a sequence of slides that resolves several merges in one or two moves. Avoid moves that displace your corner tile.

Understanding tile spawning

After every move, a new tile spawns in a random empty cell. It is a 2 ninety percent of the time and a 4 ten percent of the time. You cannot control where it spawns, which is why maintaining open cells is critical.

Score guide

Every merge adds the resulting tile's value to your score. Merging two 64s adds 128. Merging two 512s adds 1024. Chasing large merges rather than small ones is far more score-efficient — one 512 merge outscores four 128 merges combined.

Top 5 tips to reach 2048

  1. Always keep your highest tile locked in the same corner — build every move around protecting it.
  2. Prefer two slide directions (e.g., left and up) and only use the others when forced.
  3. Never make a random move; if you cannot see why a move helps, undo and reconsider.
  4. Prioritise merging the tiles closest to your corner first to keep the chain compact.
  5. When a 4-tile spawns next to your chain, treat it as a bonus and integrate it before moving on.
